What defines the perfect loudspeaker? Thiel Audio founder Jim Thiel would say that a loudspeaker must possess accuracy, in the broadest sense of the term. In other words, a loudspeaker should have linear frequency response, low distortion, and perfect time and phase alignment, or coherence. Although many loudspeaker designers will cite low distortion and linear response as goals, very few consider time and phase alignment critical to the overall sound. Some believe the cost of implementing such technology far exceeds the payoff, while others think the human ear is insensitive to the difference between coherent and noncoherent loudspeakers. PCS stands for personal coherent source. Like most Thiel speakers the design goal for the PCS was to create a speaker with tonal, spatial, transient, and dynamic fidelity. To accomplish these goals in a small footprint enclosure, Thiel developed a special coaxial midrange tweeter. This driver incorporates a 4" anodized aluminum midrange diaphragm with a 1" anodized aluminum dome tweeter. |

Thiel CS2.3: Three-way, floorstanding loudspeaker. Drive-units (all anodized aluminum): 1 (25mm) dome tweeter, coincident with 4.5 (114mm) cone midrange; 8 (204mm) cone woofer; 9 (230mm) passive radiator. Crossover frequencies: 900Hz, 3kHz. Crossover slopes: Acoustic first-order, 6dB/octave. Frequency response: 37Hz - 20kHz, 2dB. Phase response: minimum phase 5 degrees. Nominal impedance: 4 ohms (3 ohms minimum). Sensitivity: 87dB/2.83V/1m. Recommended power: 100-400W. Dimensions: 41.5 (1055mm) H by 11 (280mm) W by 15 (380mm) D. Weight: 70 lbs (154kg) each. Finishes: Standard: walnut, black ash, black laminate, natural cherry, white oak, amberwood, morado. Jim Thiel has a well-earned reputation for making highly detailed and dynamically accurate loudspeakers. His smallest offering, the PCS, was first introduced in 2000. If you long for a desktop monitor that can maintain its sonic integrity even while delivering rock and roll recording at studio playback levels, the PCS may well be your perfect desktop loudspeaker. |
